Description
Woven by Anitoli of the Sümi tribe of Nagaland, this piece carries a living tradition of Naga textile craftsmanship. Sümi weaving is traditionally created by women on the portable loin loom, using body tension to control the warp. Distinctive stripes, geometric forms and vibrant colour combinations give Sümi textiles their recognisable character, connecting each woven piece to the cultural identity of its community.
What makes Sümi weaving particularly distinctive is the way simple lines, bands and geometric structures become a visual language of identity. Traditional Sümi textiles include pieces such as the Aqhumi/Apu-Asu Qhumi and Hekutha Phi, with patterns and colours carrying cultural significance.
